Peer Mediation is both a program & a process where students facilitate resolving disputes between 2 people. It helps improve self-esteem, listening/critical thinking skills, & school climate. Peer Mediators are 4th & 5th graders who go through training during meetings before school in order to assist fellow students on the playground. They give up some of their recess time to help others. These skills are transferable outside of the classroom as well. The process is voluntary for both sides. Peer Mediators do not "make decisions" for disputants but rather work towards a win-win resolution for both sides in order to avoid further trouble. Some activities mediators are involved in throughout the year are N.K.O.T.B., Peace Week, & Project F.I.R.S.T.
